I will be presenting: Creating A Sustainable HR Function

Overview:

Social responsibility is essential for business success in this decade. As we see corporate revenues shrinking and the trends in recruiting are slowing, it becomes increasingly critical for companies to invest in reducing; waste, duplication of effort and redundancy. An out come of taking the steps to create a sustainable HR practice, is the recreation of a recognizable “green” brand – one that effectively translates into a clear recruiting message and conveys your socially responsible conscience. In this session, you will learn how to successfully build and leverage a green image that supports your employment brand to attract and retain top talent and repel the candidates that just don’t “fit”. We will review a three step process: evaluate (current practices and values congruence), eliminate (waste, redundancy and duplication of effort -> cost savings), and illuminate (the new message in both internal and external communications and external branding efforts, define the green collar trend, tactics for aligning core values with a sustainability program, and how to leverage this in your employment brand.

The Magical Adventures of Clara the Cleaning Lady: Clara Meets Mr. Twiddles
by Lynnette Murray-Gibson

HOUSEKEEPER TURNED AUTHOR DELIVERS CHILDREN’S BOOK

Book Proceeds to Benefit Education and Literacy Programs in Liberia

Lynette Murray-Gibson, a housekeeper and philanthropist, has written a delightful children’s book about the adventures of a cranky cat and the new, friendly housekeeper that comes to his quiet home. The Magical Adventures of Clara the Cleaning Lady: Clara Meets Mr. Twiddles is a wonderful storybook for school-age children. Murray-Gibson has generously agreed to donate the proceeds to her charitable foundation, which supports education and literacy programs in her birthplace of Liberia.

Clara Meets Mr. Twiddles brings the reader to the home of one crabby cat, Mr. Twiddles, who is very unsettled to find a strange new housekeeper invading his quiet domain. He is also startled to find that the kindly housekeeper, Clara, can hear and talk back to Mr. Twiddles-as a result of Clara’s Very Special Powers (VSP). Children will race to discover if Mr. Twiddles gets rid of Clara for good-or finds they can be friends.

Author Murray-Gibson gained inspiration for the book through her many years as a housekeeper, where she met the real-life “Mr. Twiddles” whose name was Jazz Purr, and to whom the book is dedicated.

Murray-Gibson, born in Monrovia, Liberia, has actively supported the cause of literacy and education for the people of her homeland. She also volunteers for a number of charities in and around her current hometown in Minnesota. Her book is also dedicated to the children of Liberia, and Murray-Gibson has planned to donate the proceeds from Clara and Mr. Twiddles to build schools and clinics around the rural areas of Liberia; an area that has been extremely impoverished by an 18-year war. With her support, children will be able to attend school free of charge.

Putting Humane back in Human Resources March 27, 2009

You cannot pick up a news story without hearing about another company who is reducing jobs, exercising layoffs, mandating furloughs or cutting heads.
It’s the cutting of heads that gives me the chills. Any company that is referring to these acts of releasing employees as “cutting heads” is being in-humane to the human resource. Think about the words they are using when they say people are – head count. How can we refer to people, real people as heads? In Medieval times talking in heads meant death. “off with their heads”, “heads will roll”. The death penalty was often times by Guillotine – literally cutting someone’s head off. This is sure dismemberment of the human spirit in our corporations.
I read a recent article about one CEO at Beth Israel hospital in MA who chose not to reduce head count as a cost saving measure, he instead chose to go out and ask the “people” what the organization should do to reduce costs and save money. …… what a novel idea, ask the people whom the decisions would affect the most, what to do. How creative! Is this some anointed CEO who one day woke up with a conscience, no, it is a leader who knows that CEO does not always translate into Chief Executive Officer. Sometimes it stands for Chief Empowerment Officer, or Chief Evangelist – of the people.

CEO’s are surely getting quite a bit of attention in the media these days, and I predict, in the near future, when companies begin to heal and start the hire or rehire phase again these organizations will be judged by their actions. They will have to answer for the choices they have made and they will be questioned by employees returning to the work environment and by new employees who are considering their employ. I can only hope more executives start thinking with their hearts, not only their “heads”.
